PRECISION project aims to enhance the management of chronic airway diseases, specifically chronic rhinosinusitis and asthma, by introducing innovative remote respiratory monitoring and assessment tools.
Within the project, RADIO6ENSE explores the use of RFID technology and mobile device connectivity for comprehensive monitoring of respiration, easing objective assessments provided by doctors, comfortable for the user.
RADIO6ENSE’s RFID-based tool for automatic multi-parametric assessment of respiration – RESPIRA Kit – is tested and validated as a non-invasive monitoring of upper and lower airway conditions associated with chronic rhinosinusitis and asthma. Clinical trials are coordinated by Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria di Sassari (Italy).
Background
Patients with chronic airway diseases, such as chronic rhinosinusitis and asthma, must be frequently examined and kept under observation from a clinician.
Traditional standard-of-care approaches require periodic in-hospital evaluations of respiratory function involving subjective patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) and objective clinical assessments with clinical instruments and doctor surveillance. Both these approaches are time-intensive and resource-demanding for the healthcare personnel as well as inconvenient for the patients.
To address these issues, the proposed initiative of PRECISION project leverages modern technology to enable at-home PROMs questionnaires collection through AI-enabled chatbots, automated phone calls, and mobile applications for domestic subjective assessments. Additionally, the project explores the use of RFID technology and mobile device connectivity for remote monitoring of respiration to ease objective assessments provided by doctors.
By integrating these solutions, the project seeks to improve patient empowerment, optimize healthcare workflows, and foster more effective disease management.
Our Role
RADIO6ENSE supplies the Hospital of Sassari with demo kits – RESPIRA Kit – for non-invasive measurement of nasal airflow using RFID temperature sensors. The kit includes an acquisition unit installed in the hospital, used for clinical trials on ill patients.
RADIO6ENSE supports the analysis of measured respiratory data.
Final Goals
- Assess RESPIRA Kit’s usability, compliance, clinical meaningfulness, and quality of data across different patient demographics.
- Advance RFID and mobile monitoring solutions tailored to chronic airway diseases.
- Improve accuracy of data collection to allow the development of a scalable tool applicable beyond the project scope, with potential for use in other contexts.
